Ordering a MacBook Pro

January 07, 2011

Tonight i am going to be ordering my first ever mac. I have always wanted to get one, but they are just so expensive that i didn’t have any surplus money to throw at one. Now though i can afford to get one. I have been working my ass off over Christmas with work and saved money.

Why am i waiting until later tonight to order? Simply because i a am waiting for my money transfer to go through onto my credit card, i deposited it into the band a few days ago and it should be in tonight, so that’s the only reason it has not been ordered it.

The mac that i am going for is the 13″ MacBook Pro, and they don’t come cheap. This MacBook costs €1,149 but since i am a student i am going to be getting a small discount, it’s not a massive amount considering the price tag but it is better than paying full price. The student price for this model is €1,080.53.

I would of liked to get a bigger version, the 15″ would have been nice, but to honest it is not worth the money, you get a slightly faster processor and a few other upgrades such as screen size, graphics card and storage space. It may seem like a lot but it’s not really, and i cannot justify spending an additional €600+ on it for those few changes.

Apple are so generous, did you know that? For me spending so much money they will through in free delivery 😮 Very generous, not really! For that price they should give me a bigger hard drive or something or throw in a mini-DisplayPort  to vga / dvi converter for free.

For a while i wasn’t sure if the 13″ would be big enough, but after seeing it on display in PC World i have decided it is a good size and it is also lightweight so is good for portability, which is what i am aiming for.

So once the mac comes it will be a huge learning curve, i have never used a mac for any prolonged length of time, this mac will be going with me everywhere so it will get a lot of use.  I also want to make an attempt at app development, most likely it will be the summer before that happens as i will be back at college in a little over a week and will simply have no time to learn any new languages.

I was considering upgrading the hard drive that comes with the MacBook Pro, it costs an extra €42.35 to go from 250gb to 320gb, a bit steep for only an extra 70gb. So i have decided not to do that and i will see how i go with storage and then down the line i will upgrade it to a bigger hard drive for a fraction of the price.

Once the MacBook pro arrives i am sure to put up a review of it.

2010 Review

January 02, 2011

I have decided that i would make this blog entry about my last year with my blog and how is has been performing with visitors coming and also what i got up to over the past year, a sort of reflection blog entry.

So first off over this past year my blog has grown a lot, it seems that ever since i started to take interest in making blog posts back in March 2009 my work has been paying off. In 2009 my total unique visitor count from January 1st to December 31st was 41,722 , a great amount of traffic, i was and still am really happy with how much traffic my blog managed to get in 2009, i really started working on my blog and i was glad to see my hard work pay off.

Now onto last year, 2010, i have to say i was shocked when i saw the stats, i didn’t expect them, i thought they may have dropped a bit but surprisingly my stats are still really good. For all of last year from January 1st to December 31st my total unique visitor count rose by a whopping 167.11% when compared to 2009 which made the total unique visits to my blog111,444! I actually nearly had a heart-attack when i saw the stats, didn’t expect it, it’s nice to have them rise, i am not going to say i don’t care if they went up or down, i do care, i take interest in my blog and seeing it doing well makes me happy :D, however that being said, it is just a number!

leateds 2010 stats

Traffic only comes with ground work being done, online it is SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) and i got that kick started back in 2009 and continued with a bit more in 2010. My top referrers to this blog in 2010 were: Google, Facebook, Smemon and Twitter, so a big thanks to all of them 😀

So onto my review of my whole year, my blog post count went down a little, not too happy with that, but i am aiming to do better this year, 2011, and hope to make a few more useful ones! So to review my year of 2010 and any accomplishments that i have made i am going to use the same approach that Sean from smemon.com made which is to go through and review the year in quarterly sections.

January – March

The first quarter of 2010 was a low here on my blog, not an awful lot happened, blog post were virtually non-existent up until March. In March i hit the milestone of blogging for one year, before that i did some blog posts, but nothing worth mentioning so i am really happy with that and coming this March 1st i will be blogging 2 years! I also began to discuss if i should get a new theme, it took a while for me to really begin work on the new theme.

I also talked about a great hack that can be done to your computer so that your flash window / YouTube page will stay open when in full screen with dual monitors, it is extremely useful and i still use it. I also talked about DkIT’s new multi-million euro IT department which back then was just finished and i got my first look and i started in that building later in 2010 when fourth year begun and then finally a lot of college work jumped up on me so i just discussed where i stood with getting it all done.

April – June

April started out with me giving a little update on what i was doing since March which included becoming more skilled with Photoshop and i also talked about a challenge that i was going to set myself later. I also discussed my thought on if Bebo would shut down, i talked about an app i use for blogging on the iPhone and i also talked about the leaked iPhone 4.

I also brought up and issue that i found when installing Windows Vista where it would hang and how to fix that problem. I was also wondering should i switch to Eircom NGB or WiMax, i later realised Eircom NGB was far better and went for it and finally at the end of April i showed how to install and operating system from a usb key.

In May i made a few changes to my old blog design, i bought tickets for Marina and the Diamonds and i also set myself a photography challenge for the month of June. I also finished my last of my degree i finished last year and i also wiped my entire computer for a clean slate for the summer. In June I started my Photo challenge for gaining good use from my new camera to learn more about Photoshop. Not much more happened in that month apart from that i failed at my challenge after 17 days, simply due to time constraints.

July – September

In July i talked about a James Bond styled party that i went to which was great crack and i also went to see Toy Story 3 which is a hilarious film and i also talked about my addiction to The Wire TV show. In August i showed how you can now sign into Google with multiple accounts and i also booked my holiday away for a few days to County Antrim and County Tyrone. Not much else happened apart from my review of my holiday / road trip which was one of the best times ever where i got to see a lot including the Giants Causeway, the Carrick a Rede Rope Bridge and the Ulster American Folk Park.

In September i registered and went back to college for my fourth and final year, i also went to see the comedian Dara Ó Briain’s gig in Vicar St. and finally i also showed how to make your own iPhone ringtones and i also finally got my first iPhone.

October – December

October was a busy month for me, i kicked it off by talking about an extremely interesting lecture we had in college about Computer Forensics and i also launched a hair salon website. I also finally launched my new blog design which you can currently see live now and i showed how to get yourself a professional looking email address. Finally i wrapped up October with showing you how to disable the Windows 7 welcome screen and i also finally went and graduated from college for the first time.

November was relatively quiet, not too much happened. But i did get to go to the Marina and the Diamonds concert that i booked earlier in the year, it was incredible and i really enjoyed it and i also bought Kinect for the Xbox 360 and the new console.

I wrapped up my year of 2010 with launching a Christmas version of my new blog theme for the month of December and i also discussed the new free music streaming service from Eircom.

And finally….

So that was my year of 2010, a lot more happened than i thought, it was a good year and fair play if you managed to make it through this whole blog post, it was extremely long, sorry about that!

Happy New Year!

busy Christmas period

December 30, 2010

It has been a while since my last post here, and i have been extremely busy for the most part of it. Since my last blog post i have fully revised and i also sat all of my exams.

A Christmas market in Clifton Mill, Ohio, Unit...

Over the few weeks previous to Christmas i was just so busy with work and college. I would be studying for my college exams and also working a 10 hour (at least) day too. I was extremely pushed for time, once i left work it was either, work – study – bed or work – bed – work. The cycle just continued for the whole month of December.

Finding time to get onto the computer was rare, when i finally got a minute i just wanted to do some mindless browsing, no blog writing or anything that would take effort. I once found myself having so little time that i had to copy my notes for the next exam onto my phone just so i could give them a look at whenever i had a minute at work.

I finished up work early on Christmas Eve and then had 3 days off to relax, and i enjoyed them as much as was possible, i just lied around the house. I am back at work again now and thankfully it is beginning to return to normality! It is still busy but nowhere near what it was like prior to Christmas. So i will be finding myself with more free time over the coming weeks and hopefully i can get something productive done with it.

No more finishing work at 1AM, its back to out on the dot at closing time 😀

Eircom Music Hub

December 09, 2010

Yesterday Eircom released their new music streaming service, Eircom Music Hub, here in Ireland. There is not too many websites that allow for music streaming, at least not here in Ireland.

If you are currently an Eircom customer then you can sign up with your account number and phone number and straight away start streaming music for free! The basic package for existing customers is free, it only allows for streaming, there are two other packages from €5.99 to €12.99, these include the extra benefit of being able to download so many songs per month, but I do not think it is worth paying because for €5.99 you still get the streaming from the free package and are only allowed 15 downloads, not a lot, but more than iTunes.

The second packages at €12.99 allows for 40 downloads and the free streaming service. In my opinion, if I was to use this service I wouldn’t pay for the downloads, if I am with Eircom, which I am, then I am more than happy with the free streaming service.

On the other side, if you are not an Eircom customer you can still use their new service, the packages begin at €6.99 for the unlimited streaming per month. Then €11.99 and €22.99 for the same packages I talked about for the current customers above.

So I signed up for the service yesterday when it came out and it is pretty good. It is currently in Beta so they are still working on it and at the moment although there is a lot of music, they are still adding more. Most of the artists I looked up only had one of their albums available, but it is not a bad start for the first day it is out!

It will be interesting to see how this service turns out, it has the current charts on the front page and also show some playlists that other users have made, also you can see what others are listening to at the moment.

I like that you can navigate to other pages and the song keeps playing. The design is nice too, when you scroll down the page the music player will always stick to the top so you can always get to the pause and volume controls if you need them.

eircom music hub logged in

There are a few things that it could benefit from, the first is that if you try to close the music hub’s tab/window that it shows a message warning  you that the song will stop, this is just like the feature that GrooveShark has, people sometimes forget that the song will stop!

Also if you could have some sort of desktop version it would also be nice or even a plugin for your browser so that you can control the player without having to go back to the Music Hub page, there is a plugin for Google chrome that someone made for GrooveShark and it works really well.

So at the moment if I was to choose between the two, I would actually probably go for Eircom’s service. Why? To be honest the interface is a million times better than GrooveShark, I find it easier to navigate and find what you are looking for. If you have an Eircom account and haven’t tried it out yet, then head on over to the MusicHub!

portfolio site design

December 06, 2010

Like I said in my last blog post, I have been putting web design on the shelf over my last semester. But since getting the flare back after creating my Christmas design here on my blog I thought I would have another go at a bit of web design.

This time I am working on a design for my portfolio, I want this site to not only showcase some of my previous works, but also to provide a place where people can contact me for some web design.

I have really got into the simplistic look for websites as of lately, less is more! Like this blog, one main colour and it has a big impact, or at least I think it does 😉 So with this in mind I set out to come up with my portfolio design.

It is always a long process of deciding how exactly you want to make it look, do I want the navigation links on the top? bottom? or middle? the decision is difficult at times and easy on other occasions. This time it took me a while to settle with my decision, I have finally decided to have them in the middle.

Here is a look at how the design looks at the moment (click for a bigger version!), I have ideas on how I will get the pages to appear, so the links will have some movement when pages are shown.

Portfolio Concept for seanlucas.com

I think I might use the design for my business cards that I want to get made. So for now the design is just a design, I have yet to make any code for it, but I think I am happy with it so the next step is just to code it, I will get this done over the Christmas break, it’s unlikely I will before then because of my college exams.
